“Brixton leisure Centre still inaccessible”

What do you think about Brixton Leisure Centre after a multi million £ renovation? i tried to use some facilities there but none was accessible. They bought brand new machines for the Gym but none was useful for a wheelchair user. Don’t you think we are being discriminated? Don’t you think we should campaign about it?

Have you contacted the Centre to let them know your concerns? You could also let the Council know as they will be concerned under the Disability Discrimination Act to be meeting their legal duty, at the very least. http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/LeisureCulture/SportsClubsCentres/LeisureCentres/BrixtonRecreationCentre_EXTRA.htm has some information about the refurbishment and a contact email.

Isn't this something that the Lambeth Disability Sports Partnership should be looking at as a priority? Youcef, I think that if you get in touch with David Strong or Hannah Gordon at DASL, they should be able to put you in touch with the relevant people. Good Luck.

yeah I have contacted the centre, I also made a formal complaint. The Disability Right Comition are dealing with it too. I today was interviwed by my local newspaper and hopefully an artical will be out at theSouth London Newspaper sometimes this week.
I definetely will contact the DASL too, I need to raise this issue as much as I can otherwhise they wont listen. But don't you think I need to try and organise a march to the council?

I gave up on the Brixton Leisure Centre some time ago. On calling the centre last year; I enquired as to the disability facilities in the complex; only to be met by a curt “Yes, it’s accessible, we have a ramp.”

Trying another route; I asked what facilities were in place for changing, showering and getting in and out of the baths. Mr Miserable Git was not playing ball. “I told we are accessible” he spat; leaving me, jaw gone south, listening to the sounds of silence as he hung up.

Me being me; I called the centre back; and, demanded to know the name of the person who ran the place. Armed with this information; and, the knowledge that complaining about anything in Lambeth is an exquisite form of masochistic torture; I placed his name in the ‘Life’s too short to be arsed’ file; re-interring the file into its dark dank vault.
