Opportunities for volunteering

Opportunities for volunteering

Volunteers already play an important part in supporting the work of our organisation and we are creating more opportunities for people to join us in this capacity, whether you are a disabled person or not.

We provide full training and support and a friendly working environment. A variety of volunteer roles are available including :

* Dealing with calls to our Enquiry Line and / or our Carers’ Enquiry Line
* Helping people claim Disability Living Allowance and apply for grants for essential living costs
* Working on our newsletters
* Office administration
* Supporting direct payments users to recruit personal assistants

We are also part of the Steering Group of the Lambeth Centre for Independent Living (CIL) and we are working with other Disabled People’s Organisations to support people who wish to volunteer for the Lambeth CIL One Stop Shop or other CIL projects.

If you want to discuss the possibility of volunteering at DASL, and enquire about the current opportunity or request an application to be posted to you, please contact our Enquiry Line on 020 7738 5656 or use the email contact form which you will find on the Contact DASL page.

Can I ask you what attracted you to this role?

The opportunity to help disadvantaged people and the chance to get confidence myself in offering information to them.

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

I live with my wife and two sons. I’m a mathematician with a PhD in pure mathematics who used to teach at Westminster School in Central London and worked as a boarding house master for 8 years.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

My hobbies are listening to opera and I like learning languages as well.

What do you enjoy the most from working on the Enquiry Line?

Helping people to achieve some goal to assert themselves is what I would say to that. It’s satisfying to know that their lives can potentially be a little bit better from the advice I can offer them.
